U8 - U10 Two Streams

Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club provides two streams for U8 - U10 League Players: House Stream and Development Stream.

Both streams offer players the opportunity to develop technical ability, comprehension of team play and formations, and individual agility, balance and coordination in a fun and challenging environment. The goal of ability based teams is to allow all players to play at their current skill and confidence level. We want all players to be challenged, to build their skills and to enjoy their playing experiences which supports Long Term Player Development. With two streams, our league teams are more balanced in overall ability which allows for a more productive learning environment and offers all players/teams a chance for success.

House and Development teams are formed at U8 based on technical staff evaluations during the U7 Initiation Program, CMFSC Academies, and CMFSC Camps. Development rosters will have a smaller amount of players to allow for continued movement from the House stream. Technical staff will work with team officials to provide opportunities for House stream players to practice and play games with Development teams as the season allows. There is no timeline on the player development pathway - each individual athlete is unique. As a result, changes to rosters may be made before, during, or after a season on player placement for all U8 - U10 age groups.

Some Guiding Principles

  • Year-round assessment of players by technical staff coaches, Age Group Head Coaches, and volunteer coaches.
  • Upward promotion of players with limited downward demotion (typically only to enhance confidence/fun).
  • Technical Staff support for all volunteer coaches in the age group.
  • A clear and interactive communication plan for parents and coaches not only in the beginning stages, but year-round.

Any technical questions, can be directly to:

Alfredo Valente – CMFSC, Technical Director
Esteban Mora - CMFSC, Head Coach, Boys Minis
Andrea Maloney
– CMFSC, Head Coach, Girls

U8 Two Streams FAQ

  • Does my child get to play with their friends?

During registration, please input any player requests in the comment section of the questionnaire. All efforts will be made to honour friends requests, keeping in mind that our first priority will be to make sure that all teams are balanced, in terms of ability, within the Under 8 House and Development Divisions. Any players registering after the deadline of June 1st will most likely not have any requests looked at.

  • How are coaches being assigned to the Under 8 teams?

Parents or individuals interested in coaching a CMFSC team is asked to complete the COACH APPLICATION PROCESS. We will consider all parents that have put their names forward as well as recommendations from Technical Staff during Initiation Program.

  • How are players selected for Development for U8?

U8 Development teams are determined by August based on evaluations provided by volunteer head coaches, Age Group Head Coaches, and technical staff coaches. These evaluations are completed throughout the U7 Initiation season, Player Academy, Prospects Academy, and Spring Break or Summer Camp. Families will be contacted directly by Andrea Maloney, Girls Head Coach, or Esteban Mora, Boys Minis Head Coach, to confirm selection by August of that year.

Players that do not receive full invitations into the Development stream, may receive an invitation to start or continue in the Prospects Academy. From time to time, players in the house stream may also be invited to practice with Development teams or play in games.

Players in both the house and development stream are continually assessed throughout the season. Technical staff may change the placement of a particular player (from house to development, or development to house) if that change is what is most beneficial for that player's long-term development. These changes can occur mid-season, or post-season.

  • How do I register my child for the House stream or the Development stream?

You cannot register for either stream. You register for the Under 8 age group and then you will be placed on a team through our team formation process.

  • How many players play on the field at Under 8?

We will be playing 6-aside at Under 8. This means 5 outfield players plus a goalie.

  • If my child is a new player or new to the club, what team would my child be placed on?

If your child is a new player or new to the club, they will initially be place on a House team until they are assessed. After assessment, they may potentially be moved temporarily or permanently to the Development stream.

  • Is there a different cost between the leagues?

No, it is the same cost for registration for both the House and Development stream.

We want all players to be challenged, to build their skills and to enjoy their playing experiences. We wish to provide coaches with technical support to ensure they are meeting the needs of their players. • What should my child wear to soccer?
For all practices and games, players must wear appropriate athletic clothing like t-shirts, shorts, sweatpants/trackpants. Jeans are not permitted. Players should also bring any weather appropriate clothing like a rain jacket, a hat/toque, and/or gloves. Players must also wear shin-guards with soccer socks and cleats or turf shoes.
