Initiation Program Information for U4-U7

With the challenges the soccer community faces with COVID-19, we have revamped our traditional U4 - U7 Initiation Program this coming Fall 2021 season and we are excited to launch brand new programs. We will offer two distinct seasons with two different registration periods:

  • The Fall 2021 program will run for 11 weeks from September to November - registration will open Monday, May 3rd 2021 at 10:00am
  • The Winter 2022 program will run from January to March - registration will open in December, 2021.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all CMFSC programming will correspond with the guidelines & restrictions from viaSport, BC Soccer and Canada Soccer. If there are changes in the PHO orders before or during any program, then the curriculum will be adjusted to be compliant with that order. Families should carefully review the Club CMFSC Return to Play and Safety Guide prior to registering. Our priority is always the safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff.

  • What is the Initiation Program?

The Initiation program is a Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer program catering to boys and girls in the Under 4, Under 5, Under 6, and Under 7 age levels. It introduces soccer gently by eliminating the team environment, which is overly competitive and individually detrimental at this vulnerable age.

  • What is the goal of the program?

Upon leaving the Initiation Program at the end of their 4-year experience our goal is that children possess more developed skills than other players in the Under 8 division and have a sense that soccer is the most enjoyable sport there is! We believe that the Initiation Program provides players with the skills necessary to take their own steps to success.

  • Does my child need prior playing experience?

No, not at all. The focus of the program is to introduce players to the game of soccer through the Initiation Program. It is a "steps to success" philosophy that works with youth players in the U4, U5, U6, and U7 age levels and gently and properly introduces the complex world of soccer to both girls and boys in a fun yet educational environment.

  • Are the teams arranged by playing ability?

Teams will be organized based on player registration. We also do our best to keep teams from previous years together. If you'd like your child placed with a friend or put on a certain team, please make note of this during your registration in the comments section of the player questionnaire - we will do our best to accommodate any requests. Of course due to team sizes, not all requests can be granted.

  • What does that registration fee include?

We will offer two distinct seasons with two different registration periods.  The Fall Registration fee includes the Fall season from mid-September to November on a team training at least once a week with Coquitlam Metro-Ford Staff Coaches as well as a complete team uniform (Jersey, shorts and socks).

  • Why is the 2021-2022 Initiation Program season split into two distinct seasons with two different registration periods?

With the challenges the soccer community faces with COVID-19, we have decided to split our traditional U4 - U7 Initiation Program into two seasons (Fall 2021 and Winter 2022) with two different registration periods; Fall 2021 registration opens May 3rd, 2021 and Winter 2022 registration will open in December 2021. By making this adjustment to our Initiation Program, it will allow us to adapt our programming to the current Provincial Health Order as needed.

If there are changes in the PHO orders during the Fall 2021, then we can adapt curriculum and practice locations for the Winter 2022 season. We want to ensure that we can reassess the program in the Fall to see if we can move back into the gyms for Winter 2022 season.  Our priority is always the safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff.

  • What is the coach to player ratio?

To achieve a high level of development and enjoyment, the Initiation Program believes in a low coach-to-child ratio, an approach that enables the staff to work with children individually to meet their developmental needs. The maximum number of players per team will be kept at a maximum of 18 (ideally 16) with one Coquitlam Staff Coach as well as at least two Parent Coaches per team.

  • Who are the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Staff Coaches?

The Initiation Program only employs the best coaches who have experience, outstanding coaching credentials and the right level of sensitivity to work with this valuable and impressionable age level. These coaches must demonstrate professionalism as well as a desire and a willingness to study and learn new techniques of development that fall within the vision of the Initiation Program and the Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC.

Click here for complete coaching staff bios
  • Who coaches the teams?

The club will hire coaches to work with each team as the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Staff Coach but will ask that parents that are interested in coaching also take part in this program as Parent Coaches, Parent Team Managers as well as Age Group Co-ordinators.

  • Do we practice rain or shine?

Yes, yes, yes! We are extremely fortunate for our outdoor sessions to practice on turf fields which hold up very well in the wet weather, therefore we will practice in the rain. Besides we live in Vancouver and if we cancelled sessions due to rain, we may miss the majority of the season (smile). The only time sessions will be cancelled will be in the event of extreme weather conditions and we will always email you of any practice cancellation.

  • What does my child wear to practices and weekend sessions?

Players should wear running shoes (shin pads, shorts, t-shirts or team jerseys) to indoor sessions and can wear cleats for outdoor sessions. Please ensure that your child's dress meets the weather conditions as we will be training rain or shine (please wear layers).

  • What team will my child play on?

The boys and girls in the each of the age groups will be separated and formed into teams (groups). The U4 age group is co-ed so boys and girls may be in a group together.

  • My child wants to play with her/his friends on the same team, is this possible?

We will do our best to accommodate such requests however depending on player numbers, gym scheduling, and coach availability, no requests can be guaranteed.

  • Can I register my child for more than one team in a season?

Players can only register for one weekly U4 - U7 Fall 2021 session.

BC Soccer also prohibits players from participating with more than one Club league program in a season.Players that register in multiple Club league programs will be contacted to cancel their registration.

  • Are there additional playing opportunities for Initiation program players?

Players have access to receive extra training through additional academies hosted by CMFSC, with two different types of academies to appeal to all levels of ability. Please view our Fall Academy page or Spring Academy page.

Boys & Girls Player Academy is open to all players and focuses on individual technical development and small-sided games.

A U7 Prospects Academy group will be added after the start of the Fall U7 Initiation Program season. Parent coaches, staff coaches, Age Group Head Coaches, and/or Technical Staff Coaches work together to identify players to be invited to attend Prospects Academy. Emails will be sent directly to families by technical staff (Andrea Maloney - girls, Esteban Mora - boys). This is an on-going evaluation process, and players may be invited at any time.

Players already registered in Player Academy and subsequently invited to Prospects Academy, will have the option to either transfer their registration or continue to do both programs. To transfer your registration please contact Member Services prior to registering for Prospects Academy.

BC Soccer prohibits players from participating in more than one Club league program. Players that register in another Club league program will be contacted to cancel their registration.

  • Do Initiation teams need TeamSnap and does the Club provide complimentary TeamSnap accounts for IA?

No, TeamSnap accounts are not necessary but optional with the approval of your team parents. CMFSC only provides complimentary TeamSnap accounts to U8-U18 and Adult teams. All Initiation practices and games are pre-determined and do not change day, time, or location. An Initiation team can set-up their own TeamSnap account and either utilize a free TeamSnap account (not all functionality is available) or collect additional funds from members to cover the cost of a fully-functioning account. If you choose to pay for a team account, you must have approval from ALL members on that team before moving forward with the account.

  • How can I get involved and help?

The success of this program is determined largely through the help of parent volunteers in roles such as Parent Head Coach, Parent Assistant Coach, Parent Team Manager and Age Group Coordinators. If you are able to help out in any of the mentioned roles, we truly appreciate your help and please make a note on your child’s registration that you are able to assist.

  • If I have a question during the program who should I contact and how do I reach them?

Once Age Group Coordinators have been assigned, we ask that all communication be directed to them or your team manager to be passed onto the appropriate Initiation Academy Contact.

Please click here for Club Contacts
  • What are my roles as a parent? Should I be working with my child at home?

Although each team within the Initiation Program will have a Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC Staff Coach, Parent Coach and Assistant Coach, we encourage all parents to become involved with their child's development by taking an active part in continuing with the soccer development at home. It has been found that the most successful players are those with parents who encourage their child (positive feedback only please) and play with them on an ongoing basis. It really doesn't matter whether or not you have a background in soccer or currently play the game of soccer, as you and your son or daughter can learn the game together.

We highly encourage that each player have their own soccer ball so the soccer does not have to stop when the training sessions are finished for the day. In the event, that your child does not have a soccer ball and you wish to purchase a ball, Initiation Program Soccer Balls can be purchased through our Club Sponsor Store, Soccer Express (www.soccerx.com), please mention that you are with the Initiation Program for an excellent rate.

  • What if a day/time is SOLD OUT? Do you have a wait list?

If a day/time is sold-out, players can be registered for the waitlist. You will be contacted directly if/when a space opens up. There is no guarantee that a space will open up.

We recommend that if another day/time works, that you register for that to hold the spot and we will contact you regarding the waitlist spot and transfer your child at that time IF a space opens.

  • What if a session is cancelled, are there make up sessions?

If a session is cancelled, we will notify all parents as soon as possible via email. We will do our best to offer a make up session however with the short season timeline, we may not be able to offer make up sessions

  • What if my child cannot make a practice or weekend session, who should we contact?

If you son or daughter cannot make a session, please simply notify your Parent Head Coach.
