Initiation Program Information for U4-U7
Registration remains on hold for U4 – U7 Initiation Program Fall/Winter League 2020-2021. If restrictions stay the same going into September, we would not be able to provide the traditional structure of the Initiation Program consisting of indoor sessions, weekend games of over 50 people on a field, etc. We are hoping that by September restrictions might ease before we announce the parameters of our program and possible changes. Our plan is to offer programming in the Fall for the Initiation age groups and will reopen registration once we are able to communicate the structure and details for the season. Once the program is announced, a new registration deadline will be set at that point so that we have time to form teams.
Our Under 4 through Under 7 age groups participate in our internal club program, the CMFSC Initiation Academy. Please find important dates and our FAQ page to answer all your questions about this program.

- Are the teams arranged by playing ability?
Teams will be organized based on player registration, gym scheduling and coach availability. We also do our best to keep teams from previous years together. If you'd like your child placed with a friend or put on a certain team, please make note of this during your registration in the comments section of the player questionnaire - we will do our best to accommodate any requests. Of course due to team sizes, not all requests can be granted.
- Are there additional Academy opportunities for Initiation program players?
Players have access to receive extra training through additional academies hosted by CMFSC, with two different types of academies to appeal to all levels of ability. Please view our Fall Academy page or Spring Academy page.
Boys & Girls Player Academy is open to all players and focuses on individual technical development and small-sided games.
A U7 Prospects Academy group will be added after the start of the Fall U7 Initiation Program season. Parent coaches, staff coaches, Age Group Head Coaches, and/or Technical Staff Coaches work together to identify players to be invited to attend Prospects Academy. Emails will be sent directly to families by technical staff (Andrea Maloney - girls, Esteban Mora - boys). This is an on-going evaluation process, and players may be invited at any time.
Players already registered in Player Academy and subsequently invited to Prospects Academy, will have the option to either transfer their registration or continue to do both programs. To transfer your registration please contact Member Services prior to registering for Prospects Academy.
- Do boys and girls play on the same team?
U4's may be co-ed, both boys and girls. U5, U6, and U7 boys and girls will be separated into separate teams.
- Do Initiation teams need TeamSnap and does the Club provide complimentary TeamSnap accounts for IA?
No, TeamSnap accounts are not necessary but optional with the approval of your team parents. CMFSC only provides complimentary TeamSnap accounts to U8-U18 and Adult teams. All Initiation practices and games are pre-determined and do not change day, time, or location. An Initiation team can set-up their own TeamSnap account and either utilize a free TeamSnap account (not all functionality is available) or collect additional funds from members to cover the cost of a fully-functioning account. If you choose to pay for a team account, you must have approval from ALL members on that team before moving forward with the account.
- Does my child need prior playing experience?
No not at all. The focus of the program is to introduce players to the game of soccer through theInitiation Academy. It is a "steps to success" philosophy that works with youth players in the U4, U5, U6, and U7 age levels and gently and properly introduces the complex world of soccer to both girls and boys in a fun yet educational environment.
- For U6 & U7 weekend sessions, do we practice rain or shine?
Yes, yes, yes! We are extremely fortunate for our outdoor weekend sessions to practice on turf fields which hold up very well in the wet weather, therefore we will practice in the rain. Besides we live in Vancouver and if we cancelled sessions due to rain, we may miss the majority of the season (smile). The only time weekend sessions will be cancelled will be in the event of thunder, lightning or snow.
- How can I get involved and help?
The success of this program is determined largely through the help of parent volunteers in roles such as Parent Head Coach, Parent Assistant Coach, Parent Team Manager and Age Group Coordinators. If you are able to help out in any of the mentioned roles, we truly appreciate your help and please make a note on your child’s registration that you are able to assist.
- How has COVID-19 impacted U4 - U7 registration?
As of May 27th, 2020, all U4-U7 Fall registration has been put on hold. We are hoping to re-open registration once we have a return to play plan in place from BC Soccer. For all the most up to date information regarding COVID-19, view our blog here - https://www.cmfsc.ca/blog-and-news/covid-19-update
- How much does the program cost?
Please review our registration fees on our Registration Information page here by clicking on the FEES tab.
- If I have a question during the program who should I contact and how do I reach them?
Once Age Group Coordinators have been assigned, we ask that all communication be directed to them or your team manager to be passed onto the appropriate Initiation Academy Contact. Please click here for Club Contacts
- My child wants to play with her/his friends on the same team, is this possible?
We will do our best to accommodate such requests however depending on player numbers, gym scheduling, and coach availability, no requests can be guaranteed.
- What age groups does the Initiation program ecompass?
Initiation is for players born in 2014 (U7), 2015 (U6), 2016 (U5) and 2017 (U4).

There will not be game days for this age group.
Under 6 (5 year Olds)
This program will include both boys and girls. This is the second step in Initiation and we will continue building on what the players have learned in the Under 5 Program. Emphasis will still be on basic skills in a fun and non-competitive environment. The sessions will still be structured as so the main focus will be the basic fundamental skills of ball control, dribbling, and passing. At this age there is a second session on the weekend. Weekend sessions will consist of warm up activities and Game Days where teams will play games against other Initiation Academy U6 teams.
Under 7 (6 Year Olds)
This program will include both boys and girls. This is the third step in Initiation and we will continue building on what the players have learned in the Under 5 and Under 6 Program. Emphasis will still be on basic skills in a fun and non-competitive environment. The sessions will still be structured as so the main focus will be the basic fundamental skills of ball control, dribbling, and passing with more emphasis beginning on game play. At this age there is a second session on the weekend. Weekend sessions will consist of warm up activities and Game Days where teams will play games against other Initiation U7 teams.
- What are my roles as a parent? Should I be working with my child at home?
Although each team within the Initiation Program will have a Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC Staff Coach, Parent Coach and Assistant Coach, we encourage all parents to become involved with their child’s development by taking an active part in continuing with the soccer development at home. It has been found that the most successful players are those with parents who encourage their child (positive feedback only please) and play with them on an ongoing basis. It really doesn’t matter whether or not you have a background in soccer or currently play the game of soccer, as you and your son or daughter can learn the game together.
We highly encourage that each player have their own soccer ball so the soccer does not have to stop when the training sessions are finished for the day. In the event, that your child does not have a soccer ball and you wish to purchase a ball, Initiation Program Soccer Balls can be purchased through our Club Sponsor Store, Soccer Express (www.soccerx.com), please mention that you are with the Initiation Program for an excellent rate.
- What day(s) will my child practice on?
Locations and times of the sessions will be determined in September once allocations have been given by the Coquitlam School Board.
- U4's & U5's will practice one session during the week
- U6/U7 Boys practice once mid-week and have a second session on Saturdays at Town Centre - North Field (U6 Boys 10:15-11:15am / U7 Boys 9-10am)
- U6/U7 Girls practice once mid-week and have a second session on Sundays at Town Centre - West Field (U6 Girls 10-11am / U7 Girls 9-10am)
- What does my child wear to practices and weekend sessions?
Players should wear running shoes (shin pads, shorts, t-shirts or team jerseys) to all indoor sessions and can wear cleats for outdoor sessions. Please ensure that your child's dress meets the weather conditions as we will be training rain or shine (please wear layers).
- What does that registration fee include?
Registration fee includes a complete season from mid-September to March on a team training at least once a week with Coquitlam Metro-Ford Staff Coaches as well as a complete team uniform (Jersey, shorts and socks).
- What if a session is cancelled, are there make up sessions?
From time to time, school events are scheduled at gyms and therefore cannot be used for soccer sessions. For weekday sessions, we will do our best to reschedule sessions at an alternate gym location. However, if a gym is unavailable, and no alternative location is available, the session will be cancelled and we will notify all parents as soon as possible via email. Unfortunately, with the season timeline, no make up sessions will be available. For weekend sessions, at Town Center, if a session is cancelled due to snow or a special event, parents will also be notified as soon as possible and no makeup sessions will be available.
- What if my child cannot make a practice or weekend session, who should we contact?
If you son or daughter cannot make a session, please simply notify your Parent Head Coach.
- What is the coach to player ration?
To achieve a high level of development and enjoyment, the Initiation Program believes in a low coach-to-child ratio, an approach that enables the staff to work with children individually to meet their developmental needs. The maximum number of players per team will be kept at a maximum of 18 (ideally 16) with one Coquitlam Staff Coach as well as at least one Parent Head Coach and one Parent Assistant Coach per team.
- What is the focus of the program? What are the program objectives?
The Initiation program focuses on psychomotor and cognitive skill development. Players move constantly, each with a ball at his or her feet, working on vital skills that will enable them to perform to their maximum potential. Through fun games and activities, they also learn basic gymnastics and running techniques.
The Initiation program shares the philosophy of most of the world's leading educational systems in developing not only the few exceptional players but also the children with less ability. For us, the greatest reward comes not from the best player, but from the child who shows the greatest improvement.
- What is the goal of the program?
Upon leaving the Initiation Academy at the end of their 4-year experience our goal is that children possess more developed skills than other players in the Under 8 division and have a sense that soccer is the most enjoyable sport there is! We believe that the Initiation Academy provides players with the skills necessary to take their own steps to success.
- What is the Initiation Program?
The Initiation program is a Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer program catering to boys and girls in the Under 4, Under 5, Under 6, and Under 7 age levels. It introduces soccer gently by eliminating the team environment, which is overly competitive and individually detrimental at this vulnerable age.
- What team will my child play on?
The boys and girls in the each of the age groups will be separated and formed into teams (groups) and assigned gym times throughout the week.
- When and where do the Initiation Program take team pictures take place? What if my child can't make the day/time?
The Initiation Program picture day will be Saturday, October 3rd (Girls teams and U4) and Sunday, October 4th (Boys teams). All pictures will be taken (rain or shine) in the upper parking lot of Cunnings Field at Town Centre Park.
If you are unable to make you picture day & time, as an individual your child can attend on October 3rd or 4th during the hours listed on the schedule to have their individual photo taken - just ensure you've filled out your picture day packet with all team information. In the event that you miss the Initiation Picture Day, once a back up date is confirmed, your age group coordinator/manager will let you know.
- When does the season start?
This program will run from mid-September to early March when the season will wrap up with the Domenic Mobilio Friendship Cup Tournament. There will also be a break for the Christmas/Holiday Season.
- Who are the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Staff Coaches?
The Initiation Program only employs the best coaches who have experience, outstanding coaching credentials and the right level of sensitivity to work with this valuable and impressionable age level. These coaches must demonstrate professionalism as well as a desire and a willingness to study and learn new techniques of development that fall within the vision of the Initiation Program and the Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC.Click here for complete coaching staff bios
- Who coaches the teams?
The club will hire coaches to work with each team as the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Staff Coach but will ask that parents that are interested in coaching also take part in this program as Parent Head Coach, Parent Assistant Coaches, Parent Team Managers as well as Age Group Co-ordinators.
