MOBILIO & TRINITY WESTERN REPEAT AS CIS CHAMPIONS
Big weekend for CMFSC alumni in university playoff action.
Coquitlam Metro-Ford product Melissa Mobilio scored in the penalty kick shootout as Trinity Western University defeated Montreal 0-0 (4-2) in the 2009 CIS Women's Championship. The win gave TWU back to back titles, after winning last year at home. It is also Trinity's third title in six years.
For Melissa, a junior midfielder, it's yet another medal to add to her overwhelming collection. As captain of the CMFSC Wild, Mobilio led her club team to five consecutive Provincial Championships, as well as a U14 National Championship, and a Bronze at U16.
Trinity Western head coach Graham Roxburgh had plenty of praise for Melissa for her performance not just in the Championship, but over the course of the season, as Melissa overcame the adversity of a chronic back ailment. "She has been a constant influence on the field, and probably our most consistent performer over the course of the season. She has always provided an attacking threat and the ability to unlock defenses with runs and crucial passes."
Roxburgh continues, adding that, "As good as she is on the field, Melissa is such a joy to coach and one of those players who leaves her mark upon her team, teammates and program. I am just delighted that she has two more seasons with us, the best is yet to come for sure."
SOUTH OF THE BORDER
Paige Adams, a redshirt freshman with Wisconsin, and former CMFSC Wild player, helped her Badgers into the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division I Championship. Wisconsin needed PK's to defeat Arizona State in round 1, with Paige scoring in the shootout. Then on Sunday, the Badgers upset 13th ranked Central Florida. Adams, who sat out all last season due to National team commitments, and missed the first eight games of this year due to injury, finished the season as the Badgers second leading scorer with 3 goals and 9 points in just 786 minutes of soccer. Paige and Wisconsin will play 7th ranked Boston College Friday night in Boston.
Sydney Leroux, a sophomore striker from UCLA, who played with the CMFSC Wild from U14 through U16, before moving to play in the US, had a very big weekend for the 5th ranked UCLA Bruins. UCLA won both their games on the weekend by a combined score of 12-1, with lopsided victories over Boise St. (7-1) and San Diego St. (5-0). Sydney had six goals, including a school-record tying four in the Boise St. match. Sydney leads the Bruins in scoring, with 21 goals and 44 points in 21 games played. UCLA will play Virginia in their third round match this Friday in Los Angeles.
